History
The Look Candy bar was first produced in 1950. That makes this candy bar nearly 75 years old as of the time of this article. At the time it was created, it was primarily popular on the West Coast of the United States. States outside of that realm may have never really got to appreciate the bar.
However, it still remains in production today and is still a popular selection on the West Coast as well. If you’ve ever heard of the Big Hunk bar, these were created to be an alternative option. However, both candy bars are now owned by Annabelle Candy Company.
Look has not always been owned by Annabelle. We don’t have a lot of information about the original creation of the bar but we do know that the original creators and producers were the Golden Nugget Candy Company. It was 1972 when Annabelle Candy Company purchased the brand and they’ve been hosting it ever since.
The candy bar is very unique by design. It’s a long and thin cand bar designed to be just the right amount of delicious flavor without having too much. It’s satisfying and utterly delicious. It’s a simple peanut nougat that is chewy and smooth. That nougat is then coating in rich dark chocolate for the perfect compilation.
The candy has changed a little bit since the beginning of its era. The biggest change has been the packaging over time. It is still mostly found on the West Coast but it is also popular in several other countries outside of the US too.
The really neat thing about the candy bar is that even though the coating is dark chocolate, you probably wouldn’t know this from the flavor. It’s still sweet without being overwhelmingly sweet and it doesn’t have the bitter aftertaste that dark chocolate is sometimes known for.
Thanks to the nougat that has tasty peanuts and uses molasses, this helps to offset the sweetness and the bitterness together, bringing you the perfect combination between the too. The dark chocolate aspect even makes it slightly healthier if you need to be able to justify your candy bar splurge.
When Was Look Candy Bar Invented?
This candy bar dates clear back to the 1950s. It was originally produced by the Golden Nugget Candy Company. The history and timing dates it in the top 10 of the longest candy bars still on the market.
That’s pushing nearly 75 of enjoyment of the Look Candy bar. It has always been popular, although it has also been slightly limited to availability. It is loved and enjoyed everywhere but most people have to purchase it online unless you live on the West Coast in the United States.
Annabelle’s Candy Company has already been around since about 1950, although they were not the original creators of the Look Candy bar. This company has made a variety of other products through the years.
Who Owns Look Candy Bars?
The original owner of this tasty candy bar was the Golden Nugget Candy Company. In 1972, Annabelle’s Candy Company purchased the Golden Nugget company and therefore purchased the infamous Look Candy bar at the same time.
Annabelle’s is located in California so it was good location to correlate the purchase, particularly since the candy bars were prominent in that area as it was. Annabelle’s is also known for products like Rocky Road, Big Hunk, Abba Zaba, and U-No. All of these are also West Coast favorites.
Annabelle’s Candy Company was founded by a man named Sam Altshuler, who immigrated to the US from Russia. He named his company after his daughter and the company continues to produce several historical selections like Look!
The candy bar is crisp and crunchy with just a touch of hardness thanks to the molasses in the nougat. Most people enjoy crunching it up or just nibbling away at it for this reason. It’s overall enjoyable and very flavorful, which is why it has remained popular in the market these 75+ years.
If you’re at all familiar with the Big Hunk bar, the Look Candy bar was created to be similar to that but coated in dark chocolate. Both are popular choices.
How Did Look Candy Bar Get Its Name?
We don’t have a lot of major history on this candy bar, unfortunately. We know the companies that created it and the stories behind the companies but not really much about the candy bar itself.
Candy bars like Big Hunk and Abba-Zaba are also popular and all the names are interesting and unique. Look! Is almost an alternative to Big Hunk with the chocolate coating over a perfect peanut nougat.
When you look at this candy bar, it pretty much encourages you to eat it so perhaps that is where they came up with the naming conception. It would certainly be fun to know what the thoughts were behind that.
Since Annabelle’s was not the original creator, we may never know. The Golden Nugget Candy Company is the company that began these and there simply isn’t any available history that tells us about the Golden Nugget’s great ideas or the grand scheme behind their bars.

Flavors
The Look Candy bar specifically has never had any alternative flavors. They have made some very slight change to the bar over the years but nothing substantial. The packaging has changed more than anything else about the bar.
That’s to be expected when you have a 75-year old candy bar, though. All branding and packaging should be updated occasionally to keep it fresh and modern. That’s how you follow trends and keep your brands relevant.
While there are no other flavors of Look! Candy bars we do know that there are spin offs like the Big Hunk and Abba-Zaba that are also very popular. These were actually around before Look! to our knowledge.

Conclusion
Even when you don’t know all the details about the history, it can still be interesting to know and learn the basic details. Look! has a long history and yet it has primarily always remained popular in certain regions.
It is produced in California and that’s where you are most likely going to find it in stores. Of course, there are online options for purchasing it so don’t give up hope if you don’t live in or around California yourself.
This candy bar and the historical brand that stands behind it, is clearly doing something right if it can manage to still be going strong nearly 75 years later. We hope to see many more classic finds make it as long as this tasteful creation has.

I know the original owner of look candy bar. He was born in Germany and lived in San Francisco. What I know he sold his factory in the sixties.
I have been wanting a Look candy bar for quite awhile, I used to eat them in the 60’s. I also loved to eat Big Hunks because of the peanuts in them, but only if I could find them while they were still soft, before they hardened. I don’t remember Look having peanuts in them, I remember liking them for the different flavor and dark chocolate. I’m wondering if they added peanuts to them later, or maybe my memory is fading.
