Chupa Chups is a Spanish lollipop and confectionery brand that is sold in over 150 countries worldwide. It’s hard to find a person who does not enjoy sucking on a hard, fruit-flavored candy stick, and even harder to find a person who has never tasted even one flavor of Chupa Chups.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, this popular lollipop has never left the shelves of stores. What’s more, they’re mostly placed right in the front so that everyone can easily see and grab them on their way out.
Let’s explore the origins of this delicious lollipop, find out interesting facts about Chupa Chups, and see which are the most popular flavors of this candy.
The Origin of Chupa Chups
Enric Bernat is the man we should thank for inventing Chupa Chups. In the early 1950s, as a worker in an apple jam factory, he came up with the idea of making lollipops. In 1958, he took over the company and changed its name to Chupa Chups.
The Chupa Chups brand name comes from the Spanish verb “chupar,” meaning “to suck.” That’s how he started manufacturing simple candies on a stick, but then he didn’t know that he was creating something special for humanity, something that everyone would remember even after all those years.
The inspiration for the candy-on-the-stick idea was his hands getting sticky from sweets in the factory he worked at. Most of the time, kids run into trouble because their hands are covered in melted sweets. Chupa Chups was a type of candy designed for kids to easily enjoy without any trouble. Chupa Chups was also placed near the cash register where kids could grab them.
At the beginning of the 20th century, candy was extremely famous and spread around the world. Finally, in July 2006, the company as a whole was acquired by the Italian group Perfetti Van Melle.

Interesting Facts About Chupa Chups
There are things that we have always wondered about Chupa Chups, and the time has come to uncover all the hidden secrets about the candy! Here are some interesting facts you might wonder about!
Logo
Have you ever wondered how famous candy logos were created? Surprisingly, the Chupa Chups logo was designed in 1969 by the famous surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. Do you remember Dali’s painting, “Melting Clocks”? Well, the design of the new Chupa Chups logo couldn’t be any less famous. The result became instantly recognizable and everyone loved it! It was also his idea for the logo to be placed on top of the lolly instead of the side so that it could always be seen.
Wrapper
Most of the time, while we want to enjoy Chupa Chups, we struggle to open them. They are super hard to open, and it’s on purpose! The candy has two layers of wrappers that are twisted together and sealed at the bottom with heat. This helps the candy to be well-preserved and keeps it in the condition it left the factory. So, it’s for our good and the result is worth the struggle to open.
Marketing of Chupa Chups
In terms of marketing, Chupa Chups is mainly targeted at kids; the product is strongly associated with youth, and it is wholly based on the idea that the brand keeps the fun of childhood going forever. It also has strong symbolic and nostalgic meanings that strongly benefit its marketing.
The first marketing campaign of Chupa Chups was the logo with the slogan “És rodó I dura molt, Chupa Chups,” which translates from Catalan as “It’s round and long-lasting.” Later in the 1980s, they started to associate the brand with anti-smoking campaigns that turned out to be very effective. In those times, they even had a slogan, “Smoke Chupa Chups.” It was targeted at attracting adult customers who wanted to give up smoking.
Why Are Chupa Chups Sticks Hollow?
There is a question about Chupa Chups that has been living in our minds for all those years: “Why are lollipop sticks hollow?” There are two main reasons why!
First of all, it has to do with keeping the candy stable. Candy manufacturers melt candy into it. This way, the lollipop stays attached to the stick and protects it from falling off of it. The second reason is for safety. If kids or adults accidentally swallow the stick, the hole will allow a little air to get through. In addition, those sticks are recyclable, and they’re made of polypropylene.
Is Chupa Chups Healthy?
As mentioned, Chupa Chups candy is a good way to give up smoking, but even though the candy doesn’t contain any dangerous ingredients, it’s primarily made from sugar and flavorings. This means that Chupa Chups may still be a danger to people who watch out for sugar and should be consumed sparingly when watching your weight.
