Cadbury Dream Chocolate (History, Marketing & Commercials)

If you love white chocolate candy, you probably love the Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar. Cadbury is a big name in the chocolate business, and many people have enjoyed their candies since childhood. While this candy bar has a more limited distribution area, this is a candy bar that makes a big impression on most people. White chocolate is one of those candies that not everyone loves, so there are not that many candy bars that are made using this kind of recipe.

Cadbury sells this candy bar in only a few markets these days, but you can order it if you want to try it in other countries. This is a really unique candy bar and one that is quite memorable for those who love white chocolate treats. For those who love solid candy bars, this is a great option. Cadbury Dream Chocolate

History

Cadbury has been a leader in the chocolate industry since 1824. This was a homegrown candy company started by a young Quaker named John Cadbury. The original company was actually known for selling hot chocolate rather than candy bars. The company slowly evolved to sell more candy than hot chocolate and became the candy company that everyone associates with Easter and Christmas time in many countries.

Cadbury sells more products in non-US markets than other candy producers of comparable sizes. This is likely somewhat linked to the fact that the company was based in England for so many years before it began selling in the US. There is also a certain lack of sweetness to Cadbury candies that make them less popular in US markets. The US candy bar market is aimed at complex candy bars, and solid bars are not very common or very well-received. This has always been a bit of a stumbling block for this company and one that is not usually surmountable in US markets.

In the US, Cadbury candies perform the best at Easter, and the solid chocolate bunnies and eggs that the candy company makes are quite well-received. There are many other varieties of these candy bars sold in other markets, and the Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar is among these other varieties that are quite popular in other markets outside the US.

Known as Cadbury White in the UK, this candy bar has recently been removed from the shelves of all UK-based markets. The Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar is now only sold in Australia and South Africa. It is a lot like the Milky Bar, which is made by Nestle. The Dream bar uses real cocoa butter, and it is technically “slimmer” than the Milky Bar.

The Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar was first launched in Australia and New Zealand in 2001. The product was one of the top 5 brands in New Zealand almost right off. In 2002, the product began to be sold in the UK and in Canada. This is an unusual order of operations since most products are rolled out in the other order. The launch in the UK and Canada was part of a Cadbury sponsorship called “Coronation Street”.

The first bars were sold at Asda, but they had poor reviews already near the end of September. To try and boost lagging sales, Cadbury released a special edition white Christmas chocolate block that was for sale only in Australia. This bar was then sold in the UK as part of a campaign that paired the Cadbury Dairy Milk Top Deck, Crispy Mint Crème, and Moro Bars into pairings. These pairings also might be paired with Cadbury Old Gold Bars or a variety of specialty bars like the Cadbury Dairy Milk Turkish Delight bar.

This apparently saved flagging sales in Australian and New Zealand markets, but it did not help the performance of the bar in UK markets. There are many other bars that are similar in the UK already, and this is probably what impacted sales in this market. Canada liked the Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar more than the UK did, but not by much.

This candy bar is sold as smaller candy bars that are essentially a third of the larger block bar and also in the traditional 180g brick. The candy bar is a white chocolate exterior layer with a rich and creamy vanilla flavor inside. The candy bar is not crunchy, and it does not have nuts or any other inclusions. This is part of what makes this bar unique. It also is what makes it not the right choice for those who do not love white chocolate when it is enjoyed all bit itself.

Cadbury is well-known for its solid chocolate bars, but most of them are milk or dark chocolate. There is some evidence based on the removal of the Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar from the UK market that this method of creating candy is not as popular when working with white chocolate. Even the relaunch of the bar under a new name and with a new package styling did not help this candy bar perform better in those markets. This is probably a very specific taste profile, and many people are not as excited by eating white chocolate as they are by eating solid milk chocolate candy.

Cadbury has stated that they are going to release some companion products. One of these is called White Giant Buttons, and the other is called Freddo White Treasures. It is unknown how these products will perform, but the company indicates that they will be along the lines of the Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar. These spin-off products might be a more suitable format than the Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar in other markets that have not liked the chocolate bar version of this sweet.

The Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar has a blue wrapper that is darker at the top than at the bottom. The Cadbury logo is written in gold, and it appears at an angle at the top of the wrapper. The “dream” part of the logo is in the dead center of the wrapper, and it is dark blue with a white shadow behind it. The words beneath the logo are “smooth and creamy white chocolate”. One of the squares of the candy bar is shown beneath the name of the bar. Underneath it is the words “DREAM white chocolate”.

This is very evidently a Cadbury bar, and the styling of the wrapper makes it clear that this is the company that has made the product. The shape and size of the bar are also typical of how Cadbury packages their larger candy bars. The small squares inside the bar are standard Cadbury styling as well.

Newer versions of the candy bar show the square of chocolate in the center of the wrapper with two cartoon glasses of milk pouring into it. The logo is lighter on these bars, and the background is more purple in color. The lettering is a little clearer on the new logo as well due to some contrast at the center of the bar’s wrapper.

Is the Cadbury Dream Chocolate Bar the Same as the Milky Bar?

The Milky Bar is a lot like the Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar, but there is puffed rice in the middle of the Milky Bar. The Milky Bar is also much more popular than the Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar, and you will find that most people would choose it over the Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar due to the crunchy center of the candy bar. The white chocolate in these candy bars is made in much the same way, and they both offer a creamy and chewy texture that is really nice.

The Milky Bar was made first and has been on the market since the 1930s. The Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar is a much newer addition to the candy scene and joins a crowded market space full of fan favorites like the Milky Bar. For those who love the Milky Bar, the Cadbury Dream Chocolate bar is a great second option, or it might even become their first choice.
